The Milwaukee Mustangs opened up their 2012 regular season on the road against the ArenaBowl runners-up Arizona Rattlers in a game that played eerily similar to the Soul's game this past Sunday. After a 4-9 start last season, QB Gino Guidugli signed on and took over for head signal caller QB RJ Archer for the Mustangs remaining five games. Guidugli went 3-2 in that span and is now the Mustangs full-time starter while Archer is heading the Georgia Force this season. As for Friday night's game, the Mustangs were up against a Rattlers team that just came off a devastating 71-70 last-second loss to the San Jose SaberCats and were determined to turn things around back in the desert. Both teams traded touchdowns for the first 30 minutes of play, but it was the Mustangs poor kicking game that kept the game closer than it should have been. K Lindsey Wolfe was 1 of 5 in PAT's forcing the Mustangs to attempt 2-point conversions in which they successfully converted 2 of 5 attempts. The Rattlers started the 2nd half with two consecutive touchdowns building on the game's largest lead of the night, a 48-39 contest with 6:01 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Mustangs then answered back with two consecutive touchdown drives of their own giving them back the lead at 51-48 with 14:56 to play. Both teams traded touchdowns as the Mustangs took a slim 65-63 lead with just 27 ticks on the clock. Last year's MVP Nick Davila led the Rattlers down the field cultivating with a 1-yard touchdown pass to the AFL's 2011 Rookie of the Year (with the Georgia Force) Maurice Purify with 4 seconds remaining sealing the Mustangs fate. Rookie WR Jared Jenkins broke onto the scene in his debut game with 211 receiving yards on 13 receptions and 2 TD's earning him AFL's Offensive Player of the Week recognition. He's a player that the Soul will have to watch out for in their two contests versus the Mustangs later this season.
