Training Camp Battles Overview

The Soul have officially finished up Day 3 of training camp officially marking the beginning of full pads practice starting tomorrow. Some good old indoor football conduct will go a long ways in determining which players make the cut after such an aggressive off-season by the Soul's front office. Only 20 players make the team's active roster and 4 others get put on the inactive roster. With so much talent even the All-Arena level players must put forth their best efforts if they want to make an impact with this team.

For comparison sake, I'm going to list the more high profile guys and this doesn't necessarily mean that everyone on this list will make it. A number of other factors can be the difference between making and not making the roster.

DL Dustin Barno
LB Dusty Bear
OL Brennan Carvalho
OL Devin Clark
LB Joe Goosby
WR/KR Jeff Hughley
OL Christian Johnson
WR Tiger Jones
DB Rayshaun Kizer
K Phil Marfuggi
WR Donovan Morgan
LB Brandon Perkins
QB Dan Raudabaugh
DB Kent Richardson
DB Micheaux Robinson
DL Bryan Robinson
FB Derrick Ross
WR Emery Sammons
DB Tanner Varner

That's 19 players right their and that's not even counting the other players currently on various transaction lists for the Soul currently. Typically each side needs the minimum number of players at certain positions and creating depth with players that can play both ways is a crucial aspect of the roster building process.

The offense typically puts on the field:
1 QB
1 FB
3 OL
3 WR

The defense typically puts on the field:
2 LB
3 DL
3 DB

So mixing and matching offensive and defensive players at certain positions is a great way to create more depth with less players. This is where the inactive roster also comes into play. Players can get injured, leave for a different league, and numerous other scenarios which would leave a void on a team's roster. The inactive roster is a great chance for young, up-and-coming players to get acclimated to the game of arena football without the pressure of coming straight from the outdoor game.

With that said, roster battles are coming soon so keep an eye out for them!
