WR Battle

As I've stated numerous times before, there aren't enough spots available for the amount of talent the Soul have brought in this off-season. This makes for a great amount of competition during training camp and how better to kick off the "Training Camp Battle" segments than on the first day of full-pads practice for the Soul.

Today I'll be focusing on the wide-outs, a position that's just one step below the quarterback in regards of importance in the game of arena football. In a sport where offense dominates, it's essential for the wide-outs to not only rack up the catches, but to ultimately score touchdowns. Looking at the position right now the Soul has a very talented and deep group in camp. Here's a look at the wide-outs currently in camp:

2011 Stats
Jones, Anthony (Vigilantes) - 170 receptions for 2225 yards and 42 touchdowns
Morgan, Donovan (Soul) - 121 receptions for 1957 yards and 37 touchdowns
Hughley, Jeff (Sharks) - 89 receptions for 1171 yards and 22 touchdowns
Sammons, Emery (Shock) - 68 receptions for 739 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Brackins, Larry (Soul) - 41 receptions for 492 yards and 13 touchdowns
Shrader, Tom - Rookie
Hoggard, Alfonzo - Rookie

That's a combined 489 receptions for 6,584 yards and 124 touchdowns.

Not all of them can be starters and the rookies will have the hardest time making this year's squad with the amount of veteran experience currently in camp. You have to also look at the duel roles that each player can accomplish as well. Each of the experienced wide-outs can play the defensive back position, but none of them have done it successfully and consistently enough to consider it a "true" benefit.

Hughley offers the best dual-benefit because of his return skills. He ranked second in the AFL last season in total return yards with 1,429 yards. Hughley also held the second best return average at 21.3 yards-per-return. He will add extreme value to this Soul team just by his return skills alone. I can't see the Soul parting ways with Hughley based off the troubles the team had in the return game last season.

Jones and Morgan has the numbers and the experience (three years each) to show their worth, but Sammons has shown great potential after two seasons with the Shock. Brackins has four years worth of AFL experience, three of those years with the Soul (2007-08, 2011), but his production has dropped since his best season in 2008. During the Soul's ArenaBowl run, Brackins racked up 107 receptions for 1412 yards and 29 touchdowns, but his production has dropped to 734 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2010 and 492 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2011. There may not be enough playing time for the four-year veteran, but being that he's turning 30 this year, he may not be looking for an extensive amount of time on the field. Staying in a city where he's called home for three seasons may be enough for Brackins to stay and fill in where needed.

The rookies are an unknown at this point and need to show something special in order for coach Plank to consider keeping them around. Whether that be as a reserve or as something else, building that relationship between an organization and a player is very important.

Training Camp Battles Overview

The Soul have officially finished up Day 3 of training camp officially marking the beginning of full pads practice starting tomorrow. Some good old indoor football conduct will go a long ways in determining which players make the cut after such an aggressive off-season by the Soul's front office. Only 20 players make the team's active roster and 4 others get put on the inactive roster. With so much talent even the All-Arena level players must put forth their best efforts if they want to make an impact with this team.

For comparison sake, I'm going to list the more high profile guys and this doesn't necessarily mean that everyone on this list will make it. A number of other factors can be the difference between making and not making the roster.

DL Dustin Barno
LB Dusty Bear
OL Brennan Carvalho
OL Devin Clark
LB Joe Goosby
WR/KR Jeff Hughley
OL Christian Johnson
WR Tiger Jones
DB Rayshaun Kizer
K Phil Marfuggi
WR Donovan Morgan
LB Brandon Perkins
QB Dan Raudabaugh
DB Kent Richardson
DB Micheaux Robinson
DL Bryan Robinson
FB Derrick Ross
WR Emery Sammons
DB Tanner Varner

That's 19 players right their and that's not even counting the other players currently on various transaction lists for the Soul currently. Typically each side needs the minimum number of players at certain positions and creating depth with players that can play both ways is a crucial aspect of the roster building process.

The offense typically puts on the field:
1 QB
1 FB
3 OL
3 WR

The defense typically puts on the field:
2 LB
3 DL
3 DB

So mixing and matching offensive and defensive players at certain positions is a great way to create more depth with less players. This is where the inactive roster also comes into play. Players can get injured, leave for a different league, and numerous other scenarios which would leave a void on a team's roster. The inactive roster is a great chance for young, up-and-coming players to get acclimated to the game of arena football without the pressure of coming straight from the outdoor game.

With that said, roster battles are coming soon so keep an eye out for them!

Recent Roster Moves

Training camp provides a hectic time for any arena football fan trying to grasp the potential makeup of their favorite team for the upcoming season. That bring's the roster number to 35 players with just one day left before players begin to report to training camp.. The Soul must cut down to 24 players remember before their first game this coming March. With the recent All-Arena additions made, the Soul have solidified two spots on their offensive line and added one of the league's best sack artists.

The Soul have recently reassigned OL Anthony Amoo, and placed K Phil Marfuggi and FB/LB Chris Frank on recallable reassignment. With Marfuggi, it's just the case of utilizing every possible roster spot to put as many competitive bodies into camp as possible. He'll be recalled and make the final roster without question. Amoo was a victim of the numbers game while Frank could be recalled if an injury or something to that degree occurs. I'll give you some of the training camp battles to watch out for once camp starts on February 25th.

Soul add another Rattler to the roster

After adding former Rattler C Brennen Carvalho three days ago, the Soul have announced the assignment of OG Devin Clark who also has played the past two seasons in Arizona. Clark started alongside Carvalho every game last season as well, as both players were instrumental in the Rattlers' 2011 tittle run.

Clark also received Second Team All-Arena honors for his play last season. The Soul, in a matter of days, have dramatically updated the offensive line with the former Rattlers All-Arena additions. Of the five true offensive lineman the Soul had on the roster previous to these two moves, they combined for just 3 years of AFL experience. Even though both Carvalho and Clark have been in the league just two years apiece, they bring All-Arena experience to a line that desperately needed an upgrade.

Their ability to consistently start at such a high level is certainly a huge plus for the Soul that was riddled with injuries and disappointing performances. The Additions of Carvalho and Clark make for the eighth and ninth former All-Arena player to sign with the Soul this off-season. They join LB Dusty Bear, WR/KR Jeff Hughley, WR Anthony "Tiger" Jones, DB Rayshaun Kizer, WR Donovan Morgan, DB Micheaux Robinson, FB Derrick Ross and DB Tanner Varner.

Clark was signed by the Rattlers eight games into the 2010 season just prior to their June 11th match-up with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. He started that week and the rest of the season making eight offensive line starts while helping the Rattlers make a playoff appearance. Clark has started around 29 straight games for the Rattlers making him one of the most durable and reliable lineman currently in the league.

Clark signed with the Washington Redskins of the NFL in 2008 as an undrafted free-agent where he originally played on the practice squad before being activated later that season. He played in two games that season, a December 14th loss at Cincinnati and a December 21st victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. He was later released an eventually made his way to the AFL where he's found success.

Devin played two years (2006-07) at the University of New Mexico after transferring from Scottsdale Community College. He started for the Lobos both years and was named first-team All-Mountain West Conference his senior year.

Soul general manager Tom Goodhines has stated Clark as "the final piece to our training camp roster" just days before players begin to report to training camp on February 23rd. I'd have to agree based on the amount of talent the Soul have added with not enough roster spots to do them justice. The soul have beefed up the quarterback position, receiving/kick returning corps, rushing game, offensive line, linebackers and defensive backfield making for one talented roster.

I wouldn't put it past the front office to make another move before/during camp, but as a fan how can you not be pleased with what the Soul have accomplished thus far this off-season? I for one am excited for some arena football action and March 18th can't get here soon enough.

Soul add Veteran Center Brennen Carvalho

The players just keep on coming for the Soul nowadays as they announced the assignment of Brennen Carvalho to compete with newcomer Jeremy Schonbrunner at the center position. The Soul brought in the former Temple Owl two Wednesdays ago, but now they have a dependable veteran presence in Carvalho.

Carvalho has spent the past two seasons with the Arizona Rattlers and was an integral part of an offensive line that allowed the second fewest sacks in the AFL last season. The offensive line allowed just 16 sacks, less than 1 sack a game, on route to the franchise's sixth ArenaBowl appearance last season, a 73-70 last second heart-breaking loss to the Jacksonville Sharks.

With Carvalho the Soul get a player who not only produced at his position, but started in every single game last season for the Rattlers. Carvalho received Second Team All-Arena honors for his body of work in 2011, just two years into his young AFL career.

Carvalho looks to help improve an offensive line unit that gave up 15 more sacks than the Rattlers last season. The Soul's new starting quarterback, Dan Raudabaugh, wasn't use to getting sacked much last season with the Dallas Vigilantes as his offensive line gave up only 16 sacks last season as well. Keeping the young, but successful quarterback comfortable and off the turf will be instrumental for the Soul's success in 2012.

In 2010, Carvalho played in 7 games for the Rattlers, starting 5 of those, with most of his starts coming on the offensive line, he also played some fullback. He scored on his first and only rush attempt of his career during a game against the Tampa Bay Storm. An injury in June ended his rookie campaign.

Coming out of Portland State (2004-07) Carvalho signed with the Green Bay Packers of the NFL as a rookie free agent and spent the season on the team's practice squad in 2008.

A three year starter at Portland State, Carvalho started in 39 consecutive games for the Vikings, the most of any senior in the 2007 draft class. He was named to the First Team All-Big Sky three years in a row (2005-07) along with receiving the Division I FCS Rimington Trophy his senior season, which is given to the Division's best center.

Another great addition by the Soul's front office giving the team every excuse to win it all in 2012 and with training camp to begin in just six days, look for some last minute additions to come.

The Top 25 Team Nicknames

Yesterday the Silver Anniversary Committee released their "Top 25 Team Names" list and your Philadelphia Soul made it at #18, no other Eastern Division team made the list. What disturbs me most though is that the "Miami Hooters" made it all the way up to #7 after being named after the famous womanizing restaurant. I feel that the "Hooters" franchise should just be forgotten altogether, but that's the beauty of lists like these I suppose.

Here's the list along with the years that they were active in the league. Enjoy, there's some doozies!

The AFL and Ustream Partner Up!

Today the AFL announced that it will be teaming up with Ustream, the leader in live, interactive, and online streaming, for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Every game, except for the NFL Network's "Arena Football Friday" Game of the Week will be available for free to view.

According to the official press release: "Fans will be able to access the broadcasts through ArenaFootball.com, Facebook, Ustream.tv, and on Ustream’s individual AFL team pages. In addition, viewers will also be able to visit Ustream’s AFL SuperChannel, a directory of the AFL and team channels, where viewers are able to navigate and select what coverage they want to watch of the 17 active channels in an interactive interface."

"Each AFL team will have its own channel on Ustream for both live broadcasts, as well as archived games on demand. All team channels will be complete with real-time chat windows allowing fans to interact before, during, and after the live broadcasted games. The video player and chat modules are fully embeddable and can be distributed by other online publishers."

"Fans will have the ability to download the Ustream for Mobile application, which will allow anyone with an iOS and Android device to watch the AFL season directly from the mobile app completely free of charge. The app enables fans to watch the team events in real-time and allow users to login through their Ustream, Facebook or Twitter accounts to participate in the chat room or Social Stream directly from their device. For up to the minute notifications of when teams go live, viewers are able to “Join Crowds” for any broadcasting team."

So what does this all mean? It means that AFL fans, during "The Year of the Fan" are getting one heck of a viewing experience. This partnership gives fans more than enough options and opportunities to watch their favorite team with the greatest of ease. Nothing can replace the live experience of attending a game, but when the Soul for instance are on the road, what better way to due your part as a fan than to watch the broadcast on Ustream?

It's just another step to bring the game of arena football to the masses and hopefully the two can partner up even further down the line. This should make for a fantastic partnership and bring Soul fans together with the ability to chat live during the games. I'll do my part and catch as many broadcasts as possible, giving myself the opportunity to provide some very detailed game reports to post after each game. So rejoice Soul fans because the season just got that much more exciting.

Soul add LB James "Dusty" Bear

The Dallas Vigilantes reunion just got a bit more crowded yesterday as the Soul added their sixth former member from the 2011 Vigilantes squad. The former Vigilante emerged as one of the league's premier pass rushers last season after erupting for 11.0 sacks, the third best output in the AFL. He finished the season with 43.5 total tackles (34 solo and 19 assisted), 12.0 tackles-for-loss (fourth best in the league), 1 interception, 3 quarterback hurries, a blocked kick and scored 2 safeties along with a touchdown.

Bear accomplished all this in 16 of the team's 18 regular season games, starting just 12 of those games. He earned a Second Team All-Arena selection for his efforts and looks to improve even more after just two seasons in the AFL.

Bear started in 1 of the team's first 5 games until becoming a consistent starter for the rest of the season. He missed two of the last four games of the season, a victory over the Philadelphia Soul and a regular season finale contest against the Arizona Rattlers.

The Vigilantes went 6-1 in the seven games that Bear registered at least one sack, losing only a 1-point heart-breaker (76-75) to the Pittsburgh Power at home. Bear's best sack output came on the road against the Kansas City Brigade in Week 8 as he recorded 2.5 sacks.

Before 2011, Bear played for two AFL teams in 2010 garnishing modest success with both squads in such a short period of time. He began 2010 playing for the Tampa Bay Storm and registered 10 total tackles (8 solo and 4 assisted) and 1.0 sack in just 5 games. Bear then played for the Alabama Vipers in 3 games where he notched 10.5 total tackles (7 solo and 7 assisted) and 1.5 sacks.

He spent 2009 with the AF2's Florida Firecats appearing in all 16 regular season games and recorded 26.5 total tackles, 2 sacks, 4 tackles-for-loss and 1 fumble recovery.

Bear best collegiate season with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (2004-07) came during his senior year recording 37.0 total tackles (24 solo and 26 assisted), 4.5 sacks, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 2 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles.

The Soul will probably have the toughest time deciding what players to keep as they continue to bring in talented players on a regular basis. Bear adds another sack threat to a defensive unit that's already pretty good at getting to the quarterback. The Soul now have 3 of the league's top 10 sack artists from 2011 and should be a force to reckon with come game time.

Training Camps

If you weren't already aware, the Chicago Rush were the first team to report to training camp this past Tuesday. The Milwaukee Mustangs, Pittsburgh Power and San Jose SaberCats report today as the second group of teams doing so. Here's the dates for when the rest of the AFL will report to training camp as well:

  • Friday, February 17th: (5 teams) Kansas City Brigade, Orlando Predators, Spokane Shock, Tampa Bay Storm  and Utah Blaze.
  • Saturday, February 18th: (4 teams) Arizona Rattlers, Georgia Force, Iowa Barnstormers and San Antonio Talons.
  • Sunday, February 19th: (1 team) Cleveland Gladiators.
  • Wednesday, February 22nd: (1 team) Jacksonville Sharks.
  • Friday, February 24th: (2 teams) New Orleans VooDoo and Philadelphia Soul.
Now you have all the dates for the 17 teams and you'll notice that two eastern division foes have already reported making the Soul the last team not just within the division, but in the entire AFL to report. With all the new faces and high expectations you'd think that the Soul would be able to report sooner, but regardless they'll have to get the job done despite this.

Darrin Kenney named Assistant Coach

Yesterday the Soul added onto their impressive coaching staff by bringing aboard former AFL veteran and assistant coach Darrin Kenney. Kenney will work alongside fellow assistant coach Leroy Thompson to work with the Soul's offensive and defensive lines. It's a role he's held previously with the AFL's Nashville Kats (2005-07), Grand Rapids Rampage (2008) and Alabama Vipers (2010).

His best coaching effort came with the Nashville Kats where the defense flourished under his tutelage. The Kats led the league in sacks in back-to-back seasons (2005-06) while ranking 1st and 3rd in the AFL in yards allowed per game in 2006 (263.9) and 2007 (277.9) respectively.

Under Kenney, then Nashville Kats starting fullback Dan Alexander broke out in 2007 when the former Nebraska Cornhusker led the league in rushing with 426 yards which is currently the third highest output in AFL history. Alexander also set a league record with 41 rushing touchdowns in 2007, a record that still stands today.

The 6'4'', 277 pound offensive and defensive lineman played 10 years in the AFL with the Tampa Bay Storm (1993), the Albany Firebirds (1994-95), the Arizona Rattlers (1997-00), and the San Jose SaberCats (2001-03). Kenney was a consistent winner in the AFL never playing for a losing team in his 10 years as a player. His teams racked up a combined 105-31 record (.772 win percentage) including three victorious trips to the ArenaBowl in 1993, 1997, and 2002.

The Lycoming College product had the reputation of being a great pass blocker while racking up 68.5 total tackles (58 solo and 11 assisted), 7.0 sacks, 14 pass break-ups, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries on the defensive end.

Kenney retired after the 2003 season to pursue a broadcasting job for the Philadelphia Soul in their inaugural season. He was the color analyst for radio broadcasts of Soul games in 2004 and was preparing for a second season until the Nashville Kats offered him a position on their coaching staff in 2005.

The former Warrior earned Mid-Atlantic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year honors in both his junior and senior years (1990-91) including an All-American selection as well in his senior year. For his efforts, Kenney was inducted into Lycoming College's Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Kenney comes back to a Philadelphia Soul organization in a very different capacity in 2012 as he'll be depended upon to keep the offensive and defensive lines efficient and effective for a championship run. The addition brings in another good character guy who's had success in the past and looks to get back on track this upcoming season.

LB Brandon Perkins

Another player looking to increase his production after an already impressive 2011 campaign is LB Brandon Perkins. Perkins started in all but 1 game last season (the 70-49 demolishing of the New Orleans VooDoo) and should display that same consistency in 2012.

Perkins ranked 4th on the Soul with 51.5 total tackles (42 solo and 19 assisted), the highest of any Soul linebacker. He ranked second and tied for second on the team in tackles-for-loss (8.5) and sacks (5.5) respectively. Perkins notched 1 interception along with 3 pass break-ups and 1 QB hurry.

Perkins led the Soul with 3 fumble recoveries along with forcing 2 fumbles which tied two other players for second best on the team. He forced fumbles in back-to-back loses to the Spokane Shock and the Tulsa Talons in Week's 14 and 15. Two of his 3 fumble recoveries came against the Milwaukee Mustangs in Week 4 and Week 13 contests.

His best game of the 2011 season came in Week 18 against division rival Cleveland Gladiators when he recorded 5.0 unassisted tackles which included his 3-sack performance. The Soul had their largest victory of the season that game defeating the Gladiators 49-21 at the Wells-Fargo Center. That 28 point margin-of-victory was helped by the defense's 7-sack performance, the team's highest output by far in 2011. The Soul's second highest sack total for a game came in Week 1 and Week 12 victories over the Pittsburgh Power and the VooDoo respectively as the defense produced 3 sacks in both contests.

Perkins played 1 season for the now defunct Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz in 2010 where he registered 14.5 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Though not Perkins most productive season in the AFL by any means, he showed more then enough in the past for the Soul to snatch him up before the 2011 season began.

Playing for the Los Angles Avengers (now defunct) of the AFL in 2007-2008, Perkins showed his value on the defensive side of the ball. In 2008, his best season with the Avengers, Perkins tallied 52.0 total tackles (a career high), 5 sacks, 3 pass break-ups and 2 forced fumbles. His rookie campaign in 2007 had him becoming a mainstay for the Avengers in the "mack" linebacker spot recording 31.0 total tackles and 1 interception.

The Mack linebacker is basically the heavier form of a Mike linebacker in the outdoor game. The Mack linebackers use their heavier load to rush the quarterback, but can only rush through the two A-gaps in the offensive line. That's on either side of the center staying inside of the two adjacent offensive lineman on the opposing team. The Mack linebacker must be a force on the defensive side of the ball because he generates a good amount of penetration and havoc on defense. Perkins fits that bill to a "T" as his build and ability allows him so much success when rushing the quarterback.

Perkins played his college ball at the University of Kansas (2002-05) where he recorded 20 sacks placing him tied for second on the school's all-time career sack list.  Starting as a true freshman, Perkins would go on to play in 46 games for the Jayhawks, but injuries derailed his chances of playing outdoors in the NFL.

With Perkins the Soul have a dependable and productive veteran linebacker for their stacked 2012 defense. A sure lock to make this year's squad, look for Perkins as he's steamrolling past the opposition on route to the quarterback.

Soul add Temple C Jeremy Schonbrunner

Yesterday the Soul announced the assignment of local product Jeremy Schonbrunner for the 2012 season. The 6'3", 305 lb center out of Temple (2008-11) showed great versatility within the offensive line for the Owls during his tenure with the team.

His most productive season came this past as he helped lead Temple to their first bowl win in 31 years with a 37-15 victory over Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl. Schonbrunner played in 12 games last season, starting 8 at center including the bowl victory over Wyoming; he also played on the field goal unit as well. Schonbrunner was part of an offensive line unit that didn't allow any sacks in games against Wyoming, Ohio, Buffalo and Akron.

In 2010, Schonbrunner played in 9 games with 1 start at center (a 30-0 thrashing of Akron) for a successful 8-4 Owls squad; he played on the punt unit as well that season. The year before that he played in 9 games for the Owls without any starts as he first saw action in his collegiate career against No. 5 Penn State (a 31-6 loss). Schonbrunner dressed for 8 games in 2008, but failed to see game action after he redshirted in 2007.

Schonbrunner adds a local face to a local team looking to rekindle some of that 2008 magic after such a disastrous first season back in the AFL after suspending operations from 2009-10. He'll provide some of that local draw that is so very much unique to a sport like arena football. Getting to see good players who missed out playing outdoors in a fan friendly atmosphere.

The Soul look to improve upon their 11th ranked sacks against ranking in the AFL last season after allowing 31 sacks. Schonbrunner brings great size and athleticism to the offensive line and seems to be a player on the rise after performing on a limited basis for Temple.

DB Kent Richardson

One of the bright spots for the Soul in 2011 was the play and development of rookie DB Kent Richardson. Richardson stepped into a starters role in Week 9 against the Jacksonville Sharks right after DB Tanner Varner suffered a season ending injury the week prior against his former team the Iowa Barnstormers.

Before his first start in his young AFL career, Richardson played in 5 of the Soul's first 7 games racking up 11.5 total tackles (10 unassisted and 3 assisted). Richardson was contributing 2.3 tackles per game coming of the bench in a reserve role.

Then Richardson's production increased rapidly while starting for the Soul in 9 of their last 11 games. During that span Richardson recorded 52.5 total tackles (47 unassisted and 11 assisted), forced 2 fumbles (against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Spokane Shock), recovered one fumble (returned it 36 yards against the Tulsa Talons), and picked off 1 pass (against the New Orleans VooDoo). Richardson registered 4.8 tackles per game during that span and his 2 FF, 1 FR and 1 INT all came in starts.

Richardson didn't start against the Arizona Rattlers (a 55-54 loss) and in the regular season finale against the Pittsburgh Power (a 61-48 loss). He only recorded 5 total tackles (4 unassisted and 2 assisted) in those 2 games.

So in the 9 games he started, Richardson registered 47.5 total tackles for a 5.3 per game average and 16.5 total tackles in the 7 games he didn't start in for a 2.4 per game average.

If we look at it from a games won perspective, the Soul went 4-5 in games that Richardson started and 2-7 in games he did not. That's a bit of an anomaly since the Soul are obviously a better team when Varner is on the roster, not too mention that QB Ryan Vena took over for failed big free agent signing QB Justin Allgood for good in Week 8 in the very same game that Varner got injured. Vena's play was a big reason why the Soul were able to muster a total of 6 wins in 2011, but Richardson's youth infusion into the DB position paid dividends for the Soul.

Richardson ended the season leading the Soul in total tackles (64.0) and pass break ups (11) and has found himself a permanent place on the Soul's roster because of it. A reliable backup at the very least, Richardson should further compliment his fellow veteran defensive backs for seasons to come.

That bring's the roster number to 33 players. The Soul must cut down to 24 players remember before their first game this coming March. A great mixture of young and veteran players is something that the Soul are lucky enough to have currently. When all is said and done, look out for one of the most talented bunch of players the Soul have ever had in their 7 year history.

If you've noticed, many of the free agents have been assigned numbers (something that wasn't updated on my last post regarding the roster) and some of the returning players have changed their numbers as well. So here's the latest when it comes to how the Soul's 2012 roster is shaping up.

Great Event

Today I have a bit of non-Soul related news to share with you all. The Jacksonville Sharks are teaming up with Second Harvest North Florida for the second year in a row in an effort to donate non-perishable canned goods to the organization. Second Harvest helps feed food-insecure households around the area through donations and various other means. Second Harvest distributed more than 20 million pounds of food last year to the 17 counties the organization serves.

The Sharks will host the New Orleans VooDoo on March 3rd at 12:30 p.m. for a free preseason contest two weeks before the Sharks first game and three weeks before the Sharks home opener. Admission will be free-of-charge, but fans are asked to bring a donation of non-perishable canned goods to the scrimmage. All canned goods will be collected outside of Sea Best Field as the event hopes to collect 15,000 pounds of donated food. Last year the same event collected 8,140 pounds of food, so the goal is to almost double the amount of donations.

This is just another example of why the AFL continues to exceed expectations when it comes to charitable events. AFL teams are able to really connect with their fan base and community in ways that more prolific sports leagues simply cannot. Free events are just about unheard of anywhere else and what makes these types of events possible you might ask? It's all because of the restructuring the AFL underwent back in 2009 and even though the players are making less, the team's charitable contributions are increasing.

Giving back to your fans and communities especially after coming off a championship season is something that many other AFL organizations should definitively look into. I don't see a reason why at least half of the teams cannot pull of an event like this once a year. It just makes someone like myself proud to be a fan of the AFL, a league that takes itself very seriously.

Soul add a Kicker to their Roster

At the Soul's most recent tryout in Philadelphia, the Soul were able to sign a kicker out of the 285 participants that showed off their skills this past Saturday. Phil Marfuggi, a New Jersey native, impressed the coaching staff enough for coach Plank to rest the consistency of the Soul's kicking game solely on his shoulders.

Marfuggi is a converted soccer player whose trying his luck at kicking footballs for a change. Marfuggi was an acclaimed goal keeper out of Clemson (2003-2006) earning All-American honors. He was named team Captain and  MVP in 2006 while garnishing First Team All-American by Soccer America and soccertimes.com in 2005. Marfuggi was drafted and signed by the New England Revolution in the first round of the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft.

In 2010 Marfuggi signed with the Harrisburg Stampede of the American Indoor Football Association where he flourished. He connected on 71-79 PATs (90% success rate) and 3-5 on field goals in the 40-49 yard range and scoring 129 points for the 11-3 Stampede that season.

Marfuggi then signed with the Iowa Barnstormers of the AFL in 2011 just two games into the season. He only appeared in the team's next three contests where he connected on 15-22 PATs (68% success rate) and missed a 47-yard field goal in his only attempt.

Bringing consistency to the kicking game is one of the biggest keys to the Soul's success in 2012. The Soul rotated four different kickers throughout the season in 2011 and performed below average in every kicking category. Marfuggi didn't perform all that well with the Barnstormers, but from the reactions out of Saturday's open tryout, things must have turned around for Marfuggi. He's shown success in the past, but now must produce results fast or else Marfuggi might be seeing another early exit from the AFL.
